I Wanna Be Ready
$20.95

Release Date: June 9, 2023
Label: Navona Records
Format: Digital & Physical (Limited Availability)

Few things have informed and inspired as much music as humanity’s search for God. Acclaimed baritone, arranger, and conductor Courtney Carey explores the relation between the worldly and the divine on I WANNA BE READY, a set of 12 spirituals arranged for different instrumentations — and each piece packs a punch.

Six of them are songs for a solo voice (soprano or baritone) and piano, and Carey, being a trained vocalist himself, deploys this setup to its fullest effect, allowing for powerful brilliance. The other half are choral pieces, which are furnished with extra layers of depth and vigor by the splendidly expressive Concert Chorale ensemble.

Even individually, these spirituals would be remarkable; together, they are a tour de force.

Choral Masterworks: Vivaldi & Amukele

Choral Masterworks

This event is pay-as-you-wish: you can choose to pay any amount within the given price range.

Join Courtney’s Stars of Tomorrow for a vibrant performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria in D major RV 589 and Timothy Amukele’s Christmas cantata What Sweeter Music, featuring The Concert Chorale, Cecilia Tucker, Shawna J. Williams, and Betty Entzminger.

The Concert Chorale moves smoothly between styles, and this program is no exception as they tackle Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria and Timothy Amukele’s What Sweeter Music. The story of the birth of Christ is a familiar one. Vivaldi (second edition) contemplates the significance of God’s incarnation in the figure of his son through the grandeur, dynamism, and richness of the classic baroque style. Fast forward a couple of hundred years, and Amukele fuses various styles to breathe new life into the Christmas story through a mix of new music and traditional carols. His multi-movement cantata features historical biblical characters we know and love, including Mary, Joseph, Herod, Simeon, and Elizabeth.
