I WANNA BE READY
The Concert Chorale | Courtney Carey | Justin Michael Austin | Jeryl Cunningham-Fleming | Joseph Joubert
Label: Navona Records
I WANNA BE READY was recorded as a part of Feel the Spirit, a Courtney’s Stars of Tomorrow series dedicated to the study, preservation, and performance of the African American Spiritual.
Few things have informed and inspired as much music as humanity’s search for God. Acclaimed baritone, arranger, and conductor Courtney Carey explores the relation between the worldly and the divine on “ I WANNA BE READY,” a set of 12 spirituals arranged for different instrumentations — and each piece packs a punch.
“The Concert Chorale (Courtney’s Stars of Tomorrow) performed at a high level not just of commitment, but of technique, phrasing, and intonation.”

An evening of music that moves from introspection to exultation. The CSOT Concert Chorale and the Bronx Arts Ensemble explore the luminous sound world of French sacred and orchestral repertoire, with works by Ravel, Fauré, Massenet, and Gounod, before turning to the depth and vitality of the American spiritual tradition.
The program features the world premiere of Balm in Gilead, a tone poem by Courtney Carey inspired by the poetry of Grace Schulman and the spiritual “There Is a Balm in Gilead,” alongside settings of traditional spirituals by Burleigh, Dawson, and Stacey V. Gibbs. The evening culminates in a powerful expression of faith, endurance, and joy.
